More than 2,000 images were taken inside both the airport’s North and South
Terminals, making the project the largest indoor implementation of Google
Street View anywhere in Europe.
Anyone with a computer, smart phone or tablet can now take a virtual tour of
the London hub. While the sight of luggage from Milan-Malpensa being
delivered to baggage reclaim number four may not excite many, it is hoped
the tool could come in handy for holidaymakers due to travel.
“We’ve worked closely with Google to make these new mapping services as
comprehensive and detailed as possible,” said Michael Ibbitson, Chief
Information Officer at Gatwick Airport. “As part of Gatwick’s £1.2 billion
investment programme we’re continually looking to innovate and improve the
passenger experience and this latest technological development will make it
easier than ever for passengers to make a speedier trip or the most of their
time at the airport.”
Other mundane airport sights spotted by Telegraph Travel included scores of
holidaymakers recently returned from Mallorca milling around baggage reclaim
number two, bored looking bureau de change staff, a notice reminding people
to “face direction of travel” on the conveyor belts, a taxi driver holding
up a sign at arrivals, and a long queue to board a flight at gate 12.
We also spotted a yawning airport worker, someone who had accidentally dropped
their suitcase, a pretty butterfly mural, two youngsters tucking into a
McDonalds Happy Meal and lots of people staring at their mobile phones. The
view inside customs is obscured.
